Exquisite 19th-Century Guatemalan Niño Jesús (Infant Christ) Figure
Hand-Carved Wood, Polychrome Gesso, Glass Eyes | Spanish Colonial Style
A striking and soulful 19th-century carved figure of the Infant Jesus (Niño Jesús) from Guatemala, crafted in the Spanish Colonial tradition. This devotional sculpture is rendered in hand-carved wood with its original polychrome gesso finish, retaining remarkable character and charm.
The Niño features a finely modeled face with a lifelike expression, inset brown glass eyes, and a delicately formed pink mouth. The hair is intricately carved, adding to the realistic quality of the piece. The figure is shown in a traditional blessing gesture, both hands and all toes intact.
Minor paint chipping is visible throughout, along with natural surface flaking and a professionally repaired area on one ear—wear consistent with age and devotional use. The figure stands freely mounted on a custom base for display.
An evocative and beautifully preserved example of Guatemalan religious folk art, blending spirituality and craftsmanship.
