Japanese Edo Period Double Tansu
Edo-period Isho-dansu (clothing chest) on a custom contemporary iron stand.
The chest is crafted from solid Elm (Keyaki), using bamboo nails. The interior drawers are lined with Hinoki (Japanese Cypress)
The chest retains its original, hand-forged iron hardware. This includes ornate corner bracing (sumi-kanagu) and circular "medallion" lock plates (maete) that punctuate the center of each drawer.
Notable are the heavy-duty "pole-carrying" handles (bō-uke) on the sides, which were historically used to slide a wooden pole through the chest for easy transport during fires or household moves.
