Japanese Edo Period Isho Dansu
This Edo-period Isho-dansu (clothing chest) is crafted from solid Elm (Keyaki), and bamboo nails. The interior drawers are lined with Hinoki (Japanese Cypress), a prized wood naturally resistant to insects and moisture, ensuring the preservation of stored textiles.
The chest retains its original, hand-forged iron hardware, including ornate corner bracing and heavy-duty side carrying handles.
The hardware features intricate "Three Friends of Winter" motifs—pine, bamboo, and plum—alongside embossed floral bosses, symbolizing resilience and longevity.
The lower section includes a biraki-do (hinged door) compartment with reinforced iron strapping, historically used to secure small valuables and documents.
