Traditional Japanese isho tansus
or clothing chests, dating to the 19th century, showcasing the understated beauty and exceptional craftsmanship of Japanese storage furniture. Made from richly grained natural wood, with mortise and tenon construction and bamboo nails, each chest features drawers fitted with distinctive circular iron lock plates, rectangular iron pulls, and robust hand-forged corner reinforcements.
Originally stacked, these tansus are shown here atop contemporary hand forged iron stands in a black matte finish.
Originally intended for clothing and household storage, these versatile chests combine functionality with sculptural presence. Their low, horizontal proportions make them particularly suitable for contemporary interiors, where they can serve as bedroom dressers, console cabinets, or distinctive accent pieces.
