19th Century Nino With Intricate Metal Gloria

An expressive and finely crafted Niño Jesús (Christ Child) figure from 19th-century Guatemala, carved in wood with polychrome decoration and inset glass eyes. The sculpture depicts the Infant Jesus with chubby cheeks, rosy complexion, and a serene, soulful gaze.

Above the figure is an original metal "Gloria" banner, ornamented with harp motifs, symbolizing the heavenly celebration of Christ’s birth. The craftsmanship reflects a blend of Spanish Colonial tradition and local Guatemalan artistry, characteristic of devotional figures created for home altars and parish use. Makers mark RB on both halo and body of nino.

The Niño shows three chipped fingers, consistent with devotional handling over generations — a testament to the figure’s authentic use and significance.

This piece embodies the spirit of humility, joy, and deep personal faith, offering a vivid glimpse into 19th-century Guatemalan religious life.
